Visas and vaccinations. These seem to go together. These are usually not pleasant to obtain, but sometimes necessary in the world of travel.
Visas aren’t usually painful, but normally a beaucratic exercise that will set you back some funds and time. For some places, though, obtaining a tourist visa is, for many, difficult to obtain (such as to the United States), while research visas to some countries may be even more difficult.
Vaccinations are almost always recommended for travel to certain places, but are at times required, such as when traveling to certain countries after visiting a country known to have Yellow Fever. In addition to vaccinations, other preventive measures may be recommended such as anti-malarial drugs.
